Yesterday I surprisingly made an appearance in one of the most strange but good things I saw in my life: the Twitter Coffee, something like the old-school IRC parties I used to assist when I was at the University. The main difference is that people used to drink beer to unsuspected limits; now a frappucino coffee is enough to talk with people.

I found a couple of already known people and people I share messages with, someone from Spain interviewed me and there was a good ambience. In the very beginning I felt a bit uncomfortable, of course, because in IRC people has at least some taste in common, but there is a jungle of different lifestyles (and lack of it too), lots of crazy things and heavy differences. The older ones, the ones who work but still have a party in mind, went out to drink and eat something.

I am getting older.

(Sabía usted que “Aprobado en Cambridge” suena parecido, pero no igual a “Ha probado el Camembert”?)

Bueno, aprobado el día de los inocentes. Cayeron muchos de mis amigos (lo siento, lo siento mucho, en serio, la culpa fue de David Rodríguez… y bueno, yo le quise ayudar produciendo todo un notición… a la altura del día de los inocentes); entre ellos cayó una amiga mía que es editora en Altanota.com (y me publicó hasta con foto, ugh, me van a querer matar cuando me vean en la calle), y hasta gente de Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, México y Estados Unidos. O sea, fue un estallido de proporciones bíblicas.

Se me ocurrió de un minuto a otro que, habiendo hecho sistemas de procesamiento distribuido (2004), servicios (2009), infraestructura (2006), desarrollo Web (2003~2009) y sistemas de alto rendimiento (2008), no sería muy difícil hacer un cuento “más o menos creíble”, sólo perceptible para los más geeks (más portable que Python, muy difícil) y para los que estaban pendientes de que hoy era 28 (@carolonline, @sebasak).

Sé que hay gente que se va a enojar mucho conmigo (@nttm, @Malita_ y otros), pero no lo habría hecho si no hubiera sido sincero en todo momento.

Al menos no matamos a nadie (déjenme tranquilito al doc von Brand, que sale al baile todos los 28 de diciembre) ni dejé a nadie sin trabajo (aunque deberían despedir a Steve Ballmer por antipático).

No me queda más que agregar que agradezco totalmente el cariño de toda la gente que me dejó comentarios, que me envió mensajes (algunos me despertaron por teléfono a las 7 de la mañana) y que me llamaron por teléfono (hasta altas horas de la noche). De huevón por hacer una broma, no dormí nada y con eso me doy por castigado.

De nuevo, ¡Feliz Día de los Inocentes!

Para terminar, una frase célebre: “Es más fácil descubrir al mentiroso que al ladrón“. Creo que esta frase debe haberla dicho algún político: el que miente sale siempre en la tele, pero al que roba sólo lo pilla Contraloría.

Les comento con placer que he sido aprobado para estudiar Estadística y Economía en la Universidad de Cambridge, honoris causa. ¿Cómo nació todo esto?

Ustedes saben que, dentro de todo lo que hago, una de las cosas que más me gusta es la investigación y desarrollo. Pues bien, ante lo que significaron mis últimas experiencias, encontré algunos parámetros que podría unir en un proyecto: tomar el algoritmo de búsqueda por contextos que hice para el proyecto INACAP 2010, añadirle algunas estadísticas como en uno de los proyectos de Continuum y montar esto en un sistema de procesamiento distribuido usando un script en Ruby que mostré en Argentina.

Perfeccionando las entradas de información a través de un parser HTML, fui capaz de crear un algoritmo muy eficiente para relacionar información dispersa en sitios Web utilizando bases de datos relacionales. Lo bueno de este sistema es que requiere que las páginas Web estén correctamente estructuradas para obtener una buena indización y obliga a los desarrolladores Web a tener una buena arquitectura, un poco en la línea de lo que quería lograr Tim Berners-Lee cuando creó el hipertexto.

El código fuente será liberado bajo una licencia open source, y el día de mañana a las 16 horas GMT publicaré por fin el paper (bajo licencia Creative Commons). No pude hacerlo antes porque, primero, significaba dejar inválida mi postulación a la Universidad (algo que quería hacer desde hace tiempo) y segundo, porque ya había obtenido presiones por parte de tres grandes empresas para que no liberara el código.

Expuse, a través de la carta solicitud, mi trabajo, basado en las estadísticas que aplico en el sistema y adjunté una demostración a baja escala sobre la manera en que cada sitio Web se relaciona con otros (utilizando sitios Web de pruebas que validaban 100% HTML y CSS). Las pruebas fueron satisfactorias, testeadas por un equipo multidisciplinario entre gente de Ciencias de la Información, Estadísticas y Economía, quienes aprobaron, por unanimidad, mi ingreso a la Universidad de Cambridge.

¿Y cómo me siento? Por supuesto, todo tiene un lado humano. Esto me trae una gran felicidad pero también una gran tristeza, pues debo dejar acá algunas cosas que me costó mucho esfuerzo conseguir, dejar mis “planes de conquista” con Paula, porque la quiero mucho y justo había conversado con ella hoy, aprovechando mi estadía en Concepción, y sobretodo a mi familia, que gracias a Dios está completamente unida (dispersa, mi hermana aún no llega de los Estados Unidos). Espero que mis amigos me comprendan y me apoyen en esta cruzada.

Never.

I took my jacket, closed the door with my key and crossed the large and thin corridor. She was two steps in front of me with a strange breathing, like wanting to avoid what was about to happen. For the first time I felt that my curiosity of knowing what was in her mind was absent. I did not even want to know what was going on in my own mind.

We went down to the first floor and walked through the avenue I live in. No one said anything, giving no importance to the thirty celsius degrees.

Ten o’clock at night. I looked into her eyes and told her what I had to say. She had changed her mind for the worse. Her selfishness, her lies and her hypocrisy destroyed what I felt for her. Worse, she had developed a way for me to self destruction. I finished my words with a cold good bye and crossed the street. I don’t remember anything else.

I woke up in a bed, days later. She learnt what happened but didn’t return. I never saw her. I will never run to her and I will never run to anyone else.

Never.

I proudly announce to you all that Santa Claus brought me my own troll. It is very cute to know that he is like an asshole pressing F5 to know what I write and what I stop to say. I know, I am a rockstar, I need to have people burning holy cows for me, isn’t it? It’s nice to have a fan club, I am so cool just because I am geek. And if someone jumped to the Pope, why not me? After all I am so egocentric that I created a Church around me and a very nice harem composed by 77 very beautiful twitter girlies.

I would love to send a special hug to my sister Angie. It’s the second time we can’t spend a Christmas together: the first one was in 2007, I could not travel to Talcahuano because of destiny; this time it is because she is in the U.S. studying and I miss her.
